New York Private English Lessons for Academic Success
Elkin's Success Story
Student Profile:
Elkin came to New York and took private English lessons with English and Culture in 2010. He had come to New York to take a graduate course in engineering at a local university.
Elkin's Challenge:
Elkin had studied English extensively in his home country, but when he started his graduate school class in the United States, he was surprised to find that he couldn't understand his professors. He was also having trouble communicating with his native English speaking classmates. In his academic courses, he heard a lot of casual phrases and didn't know what they meant or how to respond. He also needed to practice using the conditional form in his everyday conversations at the university.
The Solution:
Elkin took a free trial lesson and decided to do a series of 12 private English lessons with English and Culture. On the first day of class, Elkin and his tutor created a learning plan that helped him to be more confident while communicating in English in his graduate school courses. Through regular lessons, Elkin was able to:
- Practice correct grammatical form for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and mixed conditionals
- Use all conditional forms in real, everyday conversations
- Learn how to recognize and use new American English idioms and expressions
- Improve his use of prepositions through conversation practice
- Practice reading comprehension skills by reading newspaper articles every week and reporting on the news stories in class
Why Was English and Culture Right for Elkin?
As a graduate student with very little time available, Elkin needed a flexible lesson schedule. He needed to be able to work with his tutor in an area of New York that was close to his university. He also needed regular, 90 minute lessons at least twice per week. We were able to meet Elkin's needs and create a customized program based on his very specific academic and career goals.
